How to make slime without borax

I have a super simple and fun children’s craft idea for you to make -Slime! (without using Borax). Kids love slime and it is so simple and cheap to make! It’s awesome chemistry and a great hands on learning and sensory play activity too..
We used contact lens solution for this recipe and it turned out pretty well! Fairly comparable to the other slime recipes but a little easier to mix together.

This slime should take you under 10 minutes to make. If you follow the directions for our homemade slime, you won’t be disappointed.
Important: Don’t eat while playing with slime and certainly DON’T EAT the slime.

You will need:

180g clear glue
Food coloring
120 ML/ 4 oz contact lens solution
3 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup of water

Per 30g of glue use half a teaspoon of baking soda (: it will say how much glue is in the bottle on the side of the glue!
The only brands of clear glue that work for DIY slime are Elmer’s Glue (USA), Povinal (Asia) and a type of Korean glue used by the famous DIY slime channel PomPom. For people living in Austria/Germany, you can use Pelikan Pelifix.
Dissolve baking soda into 1/2 cup of water.
Next add the glue and mix well.
Last add the contact solution. Mix really, really well. This is sticky and messy but after kneading the slime should come together well.
Now is the time to add any food coloring you might like. I used 4-6 drops of food coloring per batch. The yellow and green required the larger amount. I love how clear glue makes this rainbow slime shimmer and shine.
Here is the slime after making (4) batches one per color. I took the lump of slime and rolled it out into a snake shape. Once all three were rolled out, I placed them side by side and just rolled them together to create a rainbow.
I used my crystal slime recipe with contact lens solution which really works so well. I’m so happy that it’s finally working and I’ve learned a bit of science along the way.

If your slime is hard then you may have used too much baking soda and/or contact lens solution. Try adding very small amounts bit by bit and stop as soon as the glue is no longer sticky 🙂

When you are done with your slime, keep it in a sealed container or a plastic ziploc bag and you can play with it for the next 3-5 days. Try to use the smallest possible container you can find. The lid of the box should ideally be touching the slime, this keeps air out and the slime soft for longer.

If you decide to give this recipe a shot, come back and let me know what you think!
